Is Your Medical Career
Truly Protected?

As an AJMQ member, you already benefit from DefenseMD’s essential legal assistance services. However, it’s important to understand that this assistance is limited to information and guidance. It does not cover the actual expenses if you need to hire a lawyer or face legal proceedings.

The CMPA: a critical foundation, but not the whole picture

The Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) provides indispensable support for physicians, especially in cases of medical negligence or malpractice. Their expertise and advocacy are pillars of security for the medical community.

However, the CMPA is not an insurer and does not cover all types of complaints or legal expenses, especially those related to disciplinary matters before the Collège des médecins du Québec or other regulatory bodies. In these situations, the CMPA offers guidance, but you are responsible for your own legal representation and costs.

Where Additional Protection Matters

  • Professional Conduct: Complaints about discipline, workplace behaviour, or disputes with colleagues typically fall outside CMPA assistance.

  • Administrative Matters: Issues related to billing practices, record-keeping, or regulatory compliance are often excluded.

  • Personal Issues: Legal challenges unrelated to patient care, such as tax disputes or employment conflicts, are not covered.

The Reality for Quebec Physicians

According to the 2023-2024 annual report of the Collège des médecins du Québec, there were 1,955 disciplinary investigations last year. No specialty or level of experience is immune. You’ve likely heard of colleagues facing disciplinary inquiries or seen these cases in the news. These situations can happen to any physician, even the most diligent.

DefenseMD: The Perfect Complement to the CMPA

Founded by physicians who understand the full spectrum of legal risks in medical practice, DefenseMD membership is designed to fill these critical gaps and ensure you are fully protected—professionally and personally.

By upgrading to a DefenseMD membership, you gain:

Coverage for both professional challenges (regulatory investigations, disciplinary inquiries, etc.) and personal matters (consumer disputes, tax audits, employment conflicts, etc.). *

Choose the legal representation you trust, from the earliest stages of a legal issue, when timely intervention is most effective. *

Protection for regulatory investigations, disciplinary inquiries, billing practice reviews, and professional conduct matters. Plus, your coverage extends beyond your practice to include support for consumer disputes, tax audits, employment conflicts, and even identity theft. *

Don’t let critical gaps in your protection put your career or personal life at risk.

You’ve likely heard of colleagues facing disciplinary investigations, don’t wait until it happens to you to discover this critical gap. Take action now to protect your career, your reputation, and your well-being.
